Winnipeg made the Onion! I think that’s more exciting than when we made the New York Times.

I’m excited to see MacArthur play tomorrow night against the Flames. If he can adapt to “the New NHL” (which after a 2 game suspension, he should now be familiar with) I think Clark MacArthur will be a really significant part of the Leafs offence.

Don Cherry continues to fill his role as biggest jackass in hockey (which isn’t easy considering some of his peers).

UPDATE Cherry supposedly apologizes for his comments on this episode of Coach’s Corner. I say supposedly because it seems more like Ron McLean trying to dig his partner out of the hole he dug himself, followed by Cherry glazing over the topic and pretending he didn’t call Grimson, Nilan and Thomson turncoats and hypocrites.

If you legitimately agree with Don Cherry and think he’s the best thing to ever happened to hockey you should probably become an NHL enforcer, because you’ve already got the brain damage that goes along with the role.

There are circumstances in sports in which you find yourself doing something you said you would never do. Maybe you’re a Red Sox fan rooting for the Yankees to beat the Rays. Or maybe you’re me, defending Sean Avery.

A couple of nights ago Philadelphia Flyer Wayne Simmonds got into a heated exchange with Avery on the ice and called him - ok, allegedly called him - a fucking faggot…

Sean Avery has always been a shit disturber. I saw him play frequently with the Owen Sound Platers and even then he was a hot head. But despite Avery’s reputation, I’m on his side on this one.

Homophobic slurs all too prevalent in hockey and in society. For whatever reason ( ** cough ** organized religion ** cough **), homophobia still remains acceptable, or at least goes unpunished all too often.

Changing the attitude in a male dominated game such as hockey could have positive affects on society. I like Michele Catalano’s idea of fining Simmonds and donating the money to It Gets Better or a similar organization.
